People don´t like change. Any suggestion of a reduction in standards of living being part of any climate solution is understandably rebuked. Talking the language of science and numbers to many is often wasteful of effort. So how do we address the non technical and change adverse audiences?
Mentioning Climate is more often than not a conversation stopper. Talking about the weather perhaps less so. Many still think climate and the weather are one and the same.
One thing for sure is our planet does not care about climate or weather. It will be definitely be around for another few billion years whatever. Human kinds choice is increasingly how much longer we as a species will and or want to be around on our planet.
The hard choices and changes to be made are on how we interact with the Planet and the climate and weather consequences many of which are already happening or are unavoidably coming our way.
Having come from Aviation the hard reality is many significant changes and improvements in systems, processes and safety only come after major accidents and loss of life, (with the accident cause often know previously to many). I do hope our western views and lifestyles don´t follow a similar path to resolution of the climate, weather, pollution, bio diversity loss, geo political poor decisions and fossil fuel misinformation challenges that we now face.
Here is a great and balanced perspective on the Climate and Weather issues and some ideas on the best ways of communicating of solutions from Professor Ed Hawkins and Rob Llewelyn. Its about an hour long and they get into the good stuff after about 5 or so minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEKi2f1PjHs
My summary of what I consider key highlights follow on below.
I support education in climate and lifestyle solutions in part through the Patreon payment platform to informative you tube broadcasters. Some of this financial support to broadcasters is funded from selling T shirts and other gifts with climate and environmental solutions messages available on a site called Red Bubble. Here is a link to my store. https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/134142938 (best seller is ´´lets stop burning stuff´´).
The planet needs CO2 and CH4 greenhouse gasses otherwise our planet would be an ice ball. The planet has also had extremes before.
So whats different this time today? It's the rate/speed at which human kind is putting Carbon dioxide and Methane into the atmosphere thats the big difference. The climate cannot cope.
All species including human kind cannot adapt quickly enough to the extremes caused by the excess green houses we, humans, put into atmosphere.
